All about antioxidants

Today, we wanted to discuss antioxidants - what they are, their benefits and how they are relevant to skin care.

What are antioxidants?


They are molecules that fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are compounds that can be harmful if their levels become too high in your body, e.g. through diabetes, heart disease and cancer.


Your body will have its own antioxidant defenses to control free radicals.


They are also found in food - especially fruits, vegetables and other plant-based whole foods. Vitamin C and E are especially effective antioxidants.


Antioxidants in food


Good sources of antioxidants include berries, green tea, matcha, coffee and dark chocolate.


Dietary antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E and flavonoids (group of plant antioxidants).


Point to note


Free radicals serve important functions that are essential for health. For example, your immune cells use free radicals to fight infections. Therefore a balance between free radicals and antioxidants is key. An excessive intake of isolated antioxidants can even have toxic effects and promote oxidative damage.


Antioxidants in skin care


Antioxidants are essential for anti-ageing. However, not only do they combat the elements responsible for visible signs of ageing (i.e. sun damage and pollution) but they also calm skin, reveal a more youthful appearance and revitalise dull-looking skin.


The main antioxidant ingredients in skin care products are:

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin E

  • Resveratrol

  • Retinol

  • Green tea

It is important to remember that with antioxidants in skin care, there is strength in numbers and they work well when combined together.
